FRANK MALONEY believes John McDermott must have done wrong in a previous life.
Few heavyweight have has such bad luck as McDermott who goes for revenge against
English heavyweight champion Tyson Fury at the Brentwood Centre on Friday 25th
June.
There was widespread condemnation of the verdict when Manchester’s Fury was
gifted a points decision when they met last September.
That wasn’t the start of his bad luck as a boxer and no wonder he came close to
quitting after that setback.
Twice he has dropped narrow verdicts against Danny Williams and even his first
pro loss against Nikolay Popov in September 2003 came because of an injured
ankle.
His promoter Maloney who stages the Conspiracy Fury bill said: “John must have
been a rascal in a previous life.
“John is the unluckiest man in the heavyweight division and one of the best
talents when he believes in himself.
“He has gone the distance with Danny Williams twice and was robbed in both
fights. He was definitely robbed in the first Fury fight.
“It was a disgrace to British boxing and hopefully that will be corrected when
John gets the chance to prove it.”
Maloney believes there will be justice for John in the 12 round rematch adding:
“I have no problem with whoever is appointed an official.
“I will only object if Terry O’Connor who was the referee in the first fight is
given a role.”
In a big clash of prospects Southern Area heavyweight champion Larry ‘The War
Machine’ Olubamiwo meets North Shields Dave Ferguson (12-2) in a British
heavyweight title eliminator.
Other heavyweight bruisers on the bill includes Olympic bronze medallist David
Price (6-0), Tom Dallas (10-0) and much talked about debutant Dillian ‘The
Villain’ Whyte.
Also boxing on Maloney’s latest knockout show is are Ashley Sexton (9-0-1),
Menay Edwards (3-0), Tony Hill (4-1) and Lewis Pettit (1-0).
