Elite trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. believes Amir Khan's increased muscle mass will not do him any favors when he steps in the ring on May 7th against WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs).
Khan, who fights at welterweight, is moving up to 155-pounds to face Canelo for his title. The British star has stated in interviews that he expects to weigh 165 pounds on fight night.
Khan has looked noticeably bigger in recent media engagements and feels the extra weight will help him against Canelo who he expects to weigh 175 pounds when he enters the ring.
Mayweather's son - retired former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. - has fought and dominated several opponents who significantly outweighed him. Big Floyd feels that the extra muscle will only cause additional problems for Khan.
The British boxer has been stopped twice in his career, at lightweight and junior welterweight. Mayweather Sr. says the additional muscle mass will actually take away Khan's biggest advantage - speed.
"What about that fight? It ain't no fight. I am going to tell you right now, Canelo is going to crush his ass. It isn't even going to be a contest. Have you heard that Khan has gotten big? All muscle. When you go and get all that muscle it takes from you man. It slows you down. It takes all your speed away. He needs more speed than the power. He ain't going to last long like that. What he is doing is wrong," said Floyd Mayweather Sr.
