Floyd Mayweather Sr., father and trainer of retired former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., is expecting Andre Ward (30-0, 15KOs) to outclass IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (30-0, 26KOs) on Saturday night.
Kovalev vs. Ward takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and headlines an HBO Pay-Per-View card.
Mayweather Sr. will be one of the many boxing personalities who are attending this event and will sit ringside to watch the fight.
The veteran trainer believes the Olympic gold medal winner is simply too skilled for Kovalev.
"To be honest I think Ward can pick him apart. Ward is too much of a good fighter for someone like Kovalev. [Power] is all he has. You will see," Mayweather Sr. said. "Ward's power, you are finally going to see [it]. Watch what I tell you. Ward is going to beat the hell out of him."
The best win on Kovalev's record came in 2014, when he dominated Bernard Hopkins in their unification fight at 175-pounds, but Hopkins was nearly 50-years-old at that time. Ward is still very close to the prime of his career.
Mayweather rejects some of the comparisons that are being made between Ward and Hopkins. He views them as completely different fighters. If the two of them were to fight, Mayweather would tab Ward to dominate Hopkins, who next month will have the final fighter of his career.
"Those are two different kinds of fighters. Look here man, if they fought right now today, Hopkins wouldn't do anything with Ward," Mayweather said.
