The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California is going all-out to snatch the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout, scheduled for March 13. According to the Los Angeles Times, AEG - the company that runs Staples Center, has made a guaranteed $20 million offer to grab the fight away from Las Vegas and the MGM Grand.
On Tuesday night, Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, cancelled a planned trip with Top Rank's Bob Arum to tour Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas. Arum was stunned by Schaefer's decision. He did tell The Times that he doesn't need to tour anything, he only wants to hear the numbers.
"I don't need to tour any facilities. I'm a numbers guy. Numbers transmit over the fax machine as well as they do in person, and I've yet to see any numbers from them. I'm told things are bigger in Texas, but Staples has stepped up and presented us the numbers. Money talks," Schaefer said.
But Vegas still has a clear edge over Los Angeles because of the state taxes that would fall on the boxers - which is not required in Nevada or Texas.
