World Boxing Council President, Jose Sulaiman, after hearing of a statement issued by the promotion, regarding the fact that the bout between an extraordinary boxer, our pride, Floyd Mayweather, and another excellent boxer, Shane Mosley, would not be for a world title, informed that the WBC has decreed the following:
The World Boxing Council will offer the WBC Diamond Belt to crown the winner of the bout as WBC Diamond World Champion, being certain that if Mayweather wins, he will accept it with pride. A fight of this nature cannot be an ordinary one as it is now apparently being designated, a fight in which a boxer gets in the ring only to earn money and to see who the winner is; that is not what the fans deserve when there is one of these great battles, in addition to that, spectacle is needed, that a belt of world prestige is put on the line in the bout, and without a doubt, the WBC Diamond Belt is the highest award given by the WBC, and is worthy of the winner of such bout.
In history, there has been only one world champion who has won the WBC Diamond Belt, the idol of The Philippines and the world, Manny Pacquiao. The winner of Mayweather vs. Mosley also deserves to be crowned as WBC Diamond World Champion.
This fight is between two elite fighters of the highest world level, who have already gone down in history and it should not be addressed as a common bout that is not given recognition by a prestigious international organization.
If the WBC is not allowed to present the belt in the ring, we will do it in the locker room of the winner.
