Discussions are ongoing for a fight between the second-ranked featherweight under the World Boxing Council (WBC), Puerto Rico's Jayson 'La Maravilla' Velez (22-0, 16KOs), and WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (56-8, 47KOs), for September 13th at the MGM Grand of Las Vegas. The Showtime Pay-Per-View main event is a rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana.

Hector Soto of Miguel Cotto Promotions, is the co-promoter of Velez. He is handling the negotiations. Promoter Pepe Gomez of Cancun Boxing is also holding talks for Cristian Mijares to get Gonzalez, but Showtime is more interested in Velez.

"We are in negotiations. We are in negotiations to fight on September 13 with Jhonny Gonzalez. But the talks are just beginning. Cristian Mijares has also been mentioned [for Gonzalez], but we understand that Mijares is not as attractive at this time for the people of Showtime, who are going to be in charge of televising the show. By Monday we may have a clearer picture," Soto said to Carlos Narvaez.
