Former super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero and former super bantamweight/featherweight champ engaged in war of words for a couple years as the Panamanian fighter tried to lure the Puerto Rican fighter into the ring.
The potential fight lost a lot of luster when Caballero lost to Jason Litzau and Lopez subsequently lost to Orlando Salido.
I asked Caballero's trainer Jeff Mayweather if he felt the fight was still worth doing even with both fighters suffering losses since their rivalry was at its boiling point. "The fight isn't what it was before but its something personal for Celestino," said Mayweather. "So from that stand point I would like to see the fight happen."
We finished up our conversation by going over potential fights for Caballero should he get past Jonathan Barros in October. Mayweather pointed to his fighters age and said that Caballero needs the big fights sooner rather than later. "Celestino is 35 years old. He needs the big fights now. Gamboa is hot right now. He's undefeated. I think that would be a good matchup," stated Mayweather.
