Over the weekend, super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe revealed that he turned down an offer from Golden Boy Promotions to fight light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins on American soil. Calzaghe says the offer the was less than what he made for his Nov. 3 unification win over Mikkel Kessler. Talks between Golden Boy and Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren are ongoing.
Floyd Mayweather Jr., who fights Ricky Hatton on Dec. 8 in Las Vegas, spoke with IC Wales and says Calzaghe should accept the offer because the UK public wants the fight more than the fans in America. He praised both fighters and predicts a great fight.
“Both Hopkins and Calzaghe are great fighters,” said Mayweather. “But Calzaghe and the British boxing fans want to see it more than Hopkins and the American fans. So for that reason Calzaghe should facilitate Hopkins at any cost. It would be a great match-up, another UK versus the US contest, and I’m sure both guys will want to bring their best.”
