The build up to Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero’s showdown May 4th continued with the second installment of All Access. Many different points were touched as we got a better understanding to each fighters training regimen. We also found out Ruben Guerrero is still pumping iron, talking trash and willing to fight in a parking lot.
While Guerrero’s arrest in New York for carrying an unlicensed weapon was vaguely discussed last week, the show actually opened with Guerrero being released from jail. Guerrero and his team discussed understanding that they need to put the situation behind them for now and concentrate on the fight at hand.
Mayweather and Guerrero will be sharing the ring May 4th but they are also currently sharing the same city as both men are training in Las Vegas, NV. Mayweather is shown heading to gym for his third work out of the day at 1am. Despite his relentless work ethic, we can find some solace in the fact that Floyd doesn’t always like going to the gym; a feeling we can all relate to. But what separates him from the rest of us is he goes anyway as he explains it takes extra commitment to be the best.
Mayweather also shares his thoughts on Guerrero’s recent arrest.
“What happened in New York is what we call a humbling situation” said Mayweather as he also discussed his own run in with the law this past summer.
After an intense workout that included showing his skills on the basketball court, Mayweather ends his day by making a late night food run at Taco Bell.
While Mayweather’s day is ending, Guerrero’s is just beginning as he goes to Mount Charleston to run in the high altitude. It’s one of the many things Robert and his team feel will get him properly prepared for his upcoming fight.
His fight against Berto is also revisited as we are reminded what got him to this position in the first place. According to Ruben Guerrero, the battering they put on Berto is nothing compared to what they’ll do to Floyd.
Back at camp Mayweather, Floyd is the one embarking on a promotional assignment this week as he and his Money Team head to Atlanta on a private jet to partake in the Final Four festivities. Being on CBS during such a highly viewed telecast is part of the perks his Showtime deal brings him. After being a guest on the commentary panel on national TV, Mayweather and his group head to an Atlanta waffle house to end the day. An exhausted Mayweather is later seen in his hotel room as he literally falls asleep in front of the cameras.
While Floyd is known for his trash talk in these documentary series’, it’s Guerrero and his father who have made it a point to be the ones doing the taunting and spewing the insults. Guerrero informs they are using a big ring for sparring as he expects Mayweather to “run around like a chicken without a head”. Ruben even extends his invitation to Floyd Mayweather Sr again to have a parking lot brawl to settle their dispute.
Floyd Sr heads to the gym to help train his son and brushes off Ruben’s offer as he says anyone looking for a fight with him has to be dumb. We also learn Floyd Sr is making sure his son isn’t over working himself in the gym. At 36 years old, the plan now is not always to work hard but work smarter.
The show ends with both fighters showing the contrast in how they have to deal with family during training camp. For Guerrero, he needs to make a sacrifice we seen many other fighters make and that’s leaving the loved ones behind while training takes full focus. For Mayweather, his kids showing up to the gym is a distraction he welcomes as he missed being with them last summer due to his incarceration.
This series continues to give us an inside look at both fighters and what they have to go through in preparation for a fight of this magnitude. The selling point hasn’t been Mayweather’s outrageous antics that we’ve seen before but a true look at each camp. With both fighters recently completing their media workouts this past week, I have a feeling we will be seeing some gems next week.
