Trainer Freddie Roach sees some serious flaws in the style of Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is rumored to be considering a return to the ring to challenge the current pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino fighter is in line to fight Ricky Hatton next May or June at junior welterweight. If Mayweather returns, he could end up stealing the Pacquiao fight from Hatton. Roach says that Mayweather is the fight that Pacquiao wants most.
“Manny wants to fight the best and the Mayweather fight is the one he wants, probably at a catchweight of 143-pounds. Mayweather says that he is going to have his father and uncle [Floyd Sr and Roger] training him and I feel that Manny can definitely deal with him. Floyd’s a great fighter but he has flaws that we can take advantage of, no doubt about it,” Roach told The Sunday Times.
Hatton will continue to be the frontrunner to land Pacquiao until Mayweather comes out and publicly announces his return to fight Pacquiao. The only information passed along has been from family members who spoke with Floyd in the aftermath of Pacquiao's knockout win of Oscar De La Hoya.
