Retired former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. believes Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) will score a knockout win over IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) - if and when they meet in the ring.
There are ongoing discussions for Canelo and Golovkin to face each other in September during Mexican Independence Day weekend. The fight was heavily discussed for 2016, but Canelo and his promoters felt it was better to wait a year - which made a lot of fans assume the Mexican superstar was ducking the fight.
"Canelo's not ducking Triple G. Canelo will beat GGG," Mayweather told Brian Campbell of ESPN during a live chat on Facebook.
Mayweather felt Golovkin was being outboxed last September when he fought IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, who suffered a fractured orbital bone and was stopped in the fifth.
Golovkin returns on March 18th at New York's Madison Square Garden against mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs), and Mayweather is not sure if Golovkin will walk away with is record intact from that contest.
“Triple G is the same guy who was just getting outboxed by a welterweight if [I'm] not mistaken,” Mayweather said. “I know boxing. Nobody in the world know boxing like me. Canelo knocks Triple G out. Triple G has his hand full with [Daniel] Jacobs [on March 18]. Jacobs can fight. The thing is this: Jacobs can dish it out, but he has to be able to take it. But it’s all about who gets who first.”
The mega-fight of the future, in the opinion of Mayweather, is a showdown between Canelo and undefeated welterweight contender Errol Spence - who is the mandatory challenger to Brook's IBF belt.
“Canelo [Alvarez] is going to end up fighting Errol Spence down the line in a big, big fight. I think it’s going to come down to those two. That’s my honest opinion," Mayweather said.
