According to sources in Mexico, Jhonny Gonzalez (58-9, 49KOs) is potentially going to face Jonathan Oquendo (25-4, 16KOs) of Puerto Rico on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather-Andre Berto Showtime Pay-Per-View, taking place on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The fight would add another Mexico vs. Puerto Rico flavor to the card. Puerto Rico's Roman 'Rocky' Martinez is already part of the card, defending his WBO super featherweight title against Mexico Orlando Salido in a rematch.
Also on the show, Badou Jack will be defending his WBC super middleweight against mandatory challenger George Groves of the UK.
Gonzalez was approached about the idea of facing IBF champion Jose Pedraza and turned that option down, as he would lose his standing in the WBC's rankings where he's close to a lucrative fight with champion Takashi Miura of Japan.
Gonzalez is continuing to rebuild after suffering a fourth round TKO loss in March to Gary Russell Jr. He came back on August 1 and blasted out Kazuki Hashimoto in two rounds. Oquendo fought on March 6th, winning a ten round decision over Gabino Cota.
