Ricardo Mayorga, following his majority decision win over Fernando Vargas at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, announced that he was moving back down to the welterweight limit of 147-pounds.
The bout with Vargas was contested at an agreed upon catch-weight of 166-pounds, two-pounds shy of the super middleweight division and three weight classes above welterweight. Mayorga was able to hold his own and scored two knockdowns on Vargas, who came to ring like a light heavyweight, weighing over 170-pounds by the time he stepped in the ring.
Most expected Mayorga to drop down to 154-pounds and demand rematches with current junior middleweight champions Vernon Forrest and Cory Spinks, but "El Matador" is looking for the fights that bring him the most money, collisions with undefeated welterweight champions Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"I would like to let everyone know, after the holidays of January, February, I'm going to break camp and move back down to 147-pounds. I want (Miguel) Cotto, I want (Floyd) Mayweather Jr., because this weight (166-pounds) was too much for me. This gentlemen (Fernando Vargas) hits way too hard at that weight. That weight is way too much for me," Mayorga said.
