Former WBC and EBU super middleweight champion Mauro Galvano has been sentenced to six and a half years in jail by an Italian court for his part in gang related crimes such as extortion.
The now 48-year-old Galvano first won the EBU title in 1990 with a points win over Mark Kaylor and later that year captured the WBC belt by beating Dario Walter Matteoni.
Galvano lost the title to Nigel Benn in 1992 and also lost a rematch in 93. He continued to fight until 1997 unsuccessfully challenging for the EBU crown four times for a total record of 30-8-2.
