Junior welterweight contender Mauricio Herrera (21-5 with 7 knockouts), 34-years-old, is ready to get back on horse after suffering a controversial twelve round decision loss to Joseph Benavidez last December in Las Vegas. In the process, Herrera lost his WBA interim-title.
Herrera is not interested in a rematch with Benavidez, but he does want to face the best fighters in his weight division. The one rematch Herrera would really like is against WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia, who also won a controversial decision in their contest in early 2014.
"I hope to return in April or May. It seems that everyone is waiting for the decision of Floyd Mayweather to know what he wants to do. I'm waiting for Golden Boy Promotions assign me a date. The truth is, [Benavidez] does not interest me. I thought about it and I feel good that I won the fight. HBO wants me against other opponents. I want to continue at 140 pounds with names like Adrien Broner, Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, Lucas Matthysse and even Ruslan Provodnikov, who I already beat once. There are a lot of opponents and if anyone wants to fight me [of value] we could go up to 147 pounds," Herrera said to ESPN Deportes.
