Looking to return from back to back losses, Mauricio Herrera (22-7, 7 KO’s) looks to rebound on Thursday on the debut of Golden Boy on ESPN. Always a man that has fell on tough luck in fights, Herrera has felt those losses have taken a toll on his behavior as a fighter.
“I haven’t behaved as a fighter in my last few camps, inside and outside the ring,” Herrera told BoxingScene.com. "I admit the losses have took a toll on me. I am refocused and ready to make a run in the new division.”
Herrera has been on the short end of the stick in fights against the likes of Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez among others. Now he will step in the ring in a tune up fight against Hector Velazquez (57-28-3, 39 KO’s). The move will hopefully setup a showdown at 147 with Lucas Matthysse who returns on May 6th against Emmanuel Taylor on the Canelo-Chavez Jr undercard.
“We were supposed to fight before,” explained Herrera. “I think if we stay at 147, a fight with Matthysse is so logical. I might take a tune up fight beforehand but definitely it’s an easy fight to make down.”
Herrera would also like to avenge his losses to many, especially to one Danny Garcia. Garcia was one of the losing end to Keith Thurman, a few weeks ago. Herrera like many thought Danny might have got the benefit of a decision he may not have earned.
“When I heard split decision, I was like oh man, he’s going to get one again,” stated Herrera. “But I did think he lost. I though Thurman started good early but then at the end they weren’t throwing at the end.”
As far as getting revenge on Garcia:
“I don’t think Danny wants it. I never cheer for other guys to lose even if I feel I beat them. So if Danny wants it one day, I’ll give it to him again.”
