Due to lingering effects of his eye injury that he suffered in his October knockout loss to Viktor Postol, Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34KOs) will not be part of the May 7th pay-per-view card featuring Saul Alvarez and Amir Khan from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"He's going to hold off, he wasn't 100-percent. He had some discomfort with that injured eye he had hurt in that Postol fight," explained Eric Gomez, Sr. V.P. of Golden Boy Promotions on Wednesday morning, just minutes before he was headed to San Diego to meet with Mario Arano, who manages Matthysse. Matthysee was stopped by Postol in ten rounds at the StubHub Center for the vacant WBC 140-pound title.
The Argentine was slated to make his welterweight debut against Mauricio Herrera on that card but now that undercard - "It's going to change a little bit. We're still working on a few other things. We're going to meet with Oscar (De La Hoya) today to discuss ideas and we'll start working on them,"explained Gomez.
There is the possibility of heavyweight, Luis Ortiz, who just recently stopped veteran Tony Thompson in six rounds in Washington D.C, but the interim WBA heavyweight champion does have a mandatory obligation.
"We would love to have him on there,"said Gomez. "He's gotta fight Alexander Ustinov. It just depends on whether we can make a deal or not because if we can't, we might have to go to purse bid. We don't know."
