Promoters Oscar De La Hoya and Art Pelullo are considering sites in Las Vegas and Miami for the highly anticipated Lucas Matthysse-Ruslan Provodnikov fight.
HBO will televise what figures to be a “Fight of the Year” candidate between these former junior welterweight champions March 28. Their promoters explored putting Matthysse-Provodnikov at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., but both venues are unavailable that night.
Peulullo told BoxingScene.com that another promoter has a hold on StubHub Center for March 28, but there is not yet an event scheduled for that night at the outdoor venue near Los Angeles.
Argentina’s Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs, 1 NC), who’s represented by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, is coming off a second-round knockout of Mexico’s Roberto Ortiz (31-1-1, 24 KOs) on Sept. 6 in Cincinnati. Russia’s Provodnikov (24-3, 17 KOs), who’s represented by Pellulo’s Banner Promotions, stopped Mexico’s Jose Luis Castillo (66-13-1, 57 KOs) in the fifth round of his last fight, Nov. 28 in Moscow.
