Golden Boy Promotions head matchmaker Robert Diaz has confirmed a report from last week by BoxingScene.com's Miguel Rivera, that hard hitting Argentine slugger Lucas Matthysse will make his long awaited return return on the Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez May 6th HBO pay-per-view undercard.
The event will take place at the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas strip.
As the article mentioned, rugged veteran Pablo Cesar Cano (30-5) of Mexico is a possible opponent. Cano is coming off of one of the biggest victories of his career, a November split decision over Mauricio Herrera. Diaz said that there are a few other welterweights under consideration as well.
Matthysse (37-4, 34 KO) has been out of the ring since October 2015, when he suffered an unexpected knockout loss to Viktor Postol in their WBC junior welterweight title fight.
Matthysse is now focused on resuming his career - but now as a welterweight contender with a firm goal of securing a world title at 147-pounds.
Diaz also confirmed that there will be an ESPN card on the eve of the the Alvarez-Chavez card and that event it will take place at the MGM Grand.
While he can't reveal the opponents of the May 5th card just yet, he said that he is trying to create a card that will produce "fireworks" to kick off the big fight weekend.
