At Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada, 19-year-old Filipino sensation Marvin Sonsona (14-0-1, 12KOs) failed to impress by fighting to a twelve round draw with Alejandro Hernandez (22-7-1, 11KOs). The scores were 115-113 Sonsona, 115-113, Hernandez and 114-114 for the draw.
Several days ago, BoxingScene.com's Ronnie Nathanielsz reported that Sonsona was not taking his training camp or the Hernandez fight seriously. Ronnie was right on the money as Sonsona was forced to vacate his WBO super flyweight title when he realized that he couldn't make the super flyweight limit of 115-pounds. He weighed in at 2.5-pounds over the division limit.
Sonsona was able to box well in the early rounds but could never hurt or keep Hernandez from coming forward. He struggled with Hernadez down the stretch, leading to some very close rounds. Sonsona, moving up to super bantamweight, is scheduled to fight in Manila on February 20.
