The most successful season of the popular Boxeo Telemundo series in years comes to a close Friday evening at Salon Jose Cuervo in Mexico City, Mexico. The main event features a pair of bantamweights on the verge of contention, as Marvin Mabait treks from the Philippines to take on Johnny Garcia in a 12-round regional title bout.
Both fighters came in at the divisional limit of 118 lb. Mabait (18-1-1, 12KO) and Garcia (18-4-1, 9KO) each enter the fight on the heels of respective two-fight win streaks. Garcia’s comes in the aftermath of a failed title bid versus Omar Narvaez; Mabait rebuilds after suffering a knockout loss to countryman Marco Demecillo last April.
Their main event bout airs live at 11:35PM ET (10:35PM CT/local time) on Telemundo. The event’s promoters announced that the 2013 World Cup Qualifier between Panama and Mexico will be shown on large TV screens inside the venue, to relieve those who were otherwise discouraged over attending the show while missing out on their other favorite pastime.
Friday’s telecast is the tail-end of a four-week block of shows representing Part III of the 2013 boxing season. The Spanish network changed formats this year, offering three separate four-week blocks in February/March, June/July and September/October.
