WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28KOs) has responded to the recent challenge of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Last week Martinez said Chavez "did not deserve a rematch" because he gave away his title in a "cheap" manner by not properly training and testing positive for marijuana in the post-fight drug test results.
Martinez dominated the match, but he was knocked down and badly hurt in the twelfth round. Chavez (46-1) says Martinez is afraid to do a rematch because now he knows the possibility of getting knocked out is very real.
"Martinez is afraid. He's knows that I'm going to knock him out. That's why he won't give me a rematch," Chavez said.
Martinez has now responded, telling Chavez that he needs to agree to take random drug tests or the rematch will never happen.
"[Chavez] Jr. should not even be talking about a rematch. First, he has to accept that anti-doping tests [will be involved in the rematch] or there is not even the slightest possibility [of a rematch happening]," Martinez stated.
Their promoters are very interested in staging a fall rematch. Martinez will defend against Martin Murry on April 27th in Argentina. Chavez is being targeted to return on a date in May.
