The cool and quaint city of Ventura, CA is the back drop during training for Middleweight kingpin Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez as he prepares to take on WBC Middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on September 15th in Las Vegas, NV live on HBO Pay Per View.

Seeing Martinez train in person is certainly an experience as its one thing to see him dazzle you with his movement and speed on television, but it’s another to see it for yourself in person. His focus never wanes as he keeps up his intense routine under the careful watch of head trainer Pablo Sarmiento.

After a vigorous workout, Martinez spoke exclusively to BoxingScene as he talked about his upcoming fight with Chavez Jr. One of the topics of discussion was Chavez’s recent interview with ESPN where he informed should he be victorious over Martinez, he’d love to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Martinez was asked what his thoughts were on Chavez’s comments and in some way giving the impression he’s over looking him.

“Chavez should worry about September 15th and 1) Making weight. 2) fitting the part. 3)That I don’t give him a beating and 4. That he remains in good enough condition so he can continue fighting after. That’s what should be most important for him” fired the Argentine southpaw.

It’s been a war of words since the press tour kicked off and both fighters have taken turns spewing insults and promises of dominant victories. Martinez and his trainer are adamant that the fight will end in a knockout with Chavez being the victim and loser in the contest. It would appear there’s a grudge but even through all the trash talk and animosity, Martinez is more worried about the prize that comes with a victory than having a personal feud.

“It’s not personal. Well, there’s something personal about it because we talked a lot but first the world title is in play. The Middleweight title is on the line and that’s the most important to me. That’s what motivates me every day” Martinez would tell BoxingScene.

The fight has been a hit at the box office as ticket sales have been a huge success. Martinez urges all boxing fans to tune in to not only see a great fight, but to see a world title switch hands.

“Don’t miss this fight because it will be a great show. Chavez will be ready and so will I. We will give a great fight and it will be worth watching and you will see a new world champion”.
