BoxingScene.com caught up with super bantamweight prospect Robert Marroquin (22-1) to get his thoughts on the fallout of his fight against WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. The two were scheduled to clash on the televised portion of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. versus Sergio Martinez pay-per-view fight that takes place on September 15th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Marroquin is disappointed that he won't receive his first title shot, he understands Rigondeaux's situation and knows that it isn't the Cuban's fault.
"I am disappointed in a way but I am aware of the problems that Rigondeaux is having and I understand why the fight can't go on," Marroquin told BoxingScene.com.
The 23 year-old Texas native will still fight on the card and will now face Oscar Gonzalez (19-1) of Nayarit, Mexico. Marroquin was deep into his camp training for the left handed Rigondeaux and now has to completely change gears and get ready for Gonzalez who fights out of an orthodox stance. He admits that it won't be easy but is fully confident that his his skills will be on full display come fight night.
"It completely changes everything that I have been working on for the past two months. I do not know much about Gonzalez but I am an experienced fighter and I will show the world my versatility on September 15th," Marroquin stated.
Marroquin also said that his fight against Gonzalez will still be part of the televised portion of the pay-per-view card.
