The latest ruling by the WBO may open the door for a possible fight between Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez. The WBO's Paco Valcárcel issued a ruling that allows Marquez additional time to make his mandatory defense of the lightweight title against interim-champion Michael Katsidis. Marquez is viewed as a "super champion" by the sanctioning body; allowing the Mexican fighter the opportunity to take another fight.
Golden Boy Promotions have eyed May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as the comeback date for Marquez. Ricky Hatton, according to reports in Manchester, is set to make his return to the ring with an announcement to take place in February. Hatton is said to be back in training and Marquez is the likely comeback target. Golden Boy promotes both fighters. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has spoken with both of them in the past and there is serious interest from both parties.
