Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez has advised his countryman, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs), to give in to the demands of WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs). There are ongoing discussions to have them fight on May 2nd, Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Canelo, who recently stated that negotiating with Cotto's side was 'difficult,' said there had to be a "50-50" split of the financials and he wanted a catch-weight of 155-pounds.
"I believe that [Canelo] must [give in] to Cotto's demands. My view is this - if you want to fight, to show as he has said that he wants to be the best Mexican - then you have to allow Cotto to ask for what he wants. When [Canelo] is in the ring, then he can demonstrate [that he's better] and do what he has to do. He has what it takes to show that he's a good fighter," said Marquez on the Golpe a Golpe program.
"[Even] if Cotto gets more money, if [Canelo] beats Cotto he could then charge whatever he wishes, but first he must overcome him."
