Shropshire’s Mark Lloyd challenges Luciano Abis for the EBU-EU welterweight title on April 15 according to the 35-year-old fighter. Lloyd will travel to the title holder’s hometown of Cagliari for the shot; he is expecting a tough night’s work as he bids to hand the 31-year-old Italian his second pro defeat. Abis is currently 30-1-1 (14).
“I was getting disheartened with boxing and I was ready to knock it on the head. But all the contracts and paperwork have come through for this one and I’m really up for it,” said Lloyd when speaking to Shropshirestar.com.
“I don’t know much about Abis. He has won 30 and drawn one of 32 contests and his only defeat has been on a split decision so he has got a good record. I’m up at five running every day and then going swimming at 6.30am. I then go to work and four nights a week I’m going over to my boxing gym in Wednesbury.”
Lloyd holds a 15-3 (3) slate; a plumber by trade, Mark is 3-0 since his last defeat, an eighth round TKO reverse to Jamie Cox in 2009. The 5’ 10’’ boxer took part in 2008’s Prizefighter: The Welterweights tournament, losing out on points to former EBU boss Ted Bami in the semi-final.
