At the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma, super middleweight prospect Marcus Johnson (18-0, 14KOs) won a dominating eight round decision over a game Victor Villereal (8-4-2, 4KOs). The scores were 80-71, 80-71 and 80-71.
Johnson came out strong with counter lefts and rights that were pushing Villereal back. He dug some good hooks to the body. In the second, Johnson was countering Villereal often and landing those hooks to the body at close range. Johnson continued to dominate in the third, landing the same hooks to the head and body from different angles. Villereal tried to stay on top of Johnson in order to smother his power. More damage by Johnson in the fourth round. He began to land lead rights and double up on his hooks to the head and body.
Villereal managed to do better in the fifth but in the sixth Johnson poured on the heat and scored a knockdown. Johnson punished him with power punches in the seventh. Villereal contnued to hang in there. Prior to the start of the eight, Johnson told his corner that his right hand was hurt and he couldn't throw any punches with it. In the eight, Johnson stayed off his right for the most part and used his left to try and finish Villereal off. Villereal took some punishment but lasted until the bell.
