Former three-division champion Marco Antonio Barrera wants to resume his career as a free agent, and not under the banner of Golden Boy Promotions where the Mexican legend is a minority partner.
According to a report in ESTO, Barrera is scheduled to sit down with Golden Boy in Los Angeles and let it be known that he wants to fight under his own promotional banner. Jorge Barrera, Marco's brother, confirmed the meeting. There had been some speculation about Barrera facing Humberto Soto in Mexico, but reports coming out of the country have said the rumors are false.
Well-known Mexican boxing agent/manger Rafael Mendoza told the paper that Barrera will not fight Soto and that Barrera will sit down with Golden Boy to figure out if he owes them any additional fights, since Golden Boy is claiming that he does.
"Barrera will not fight Humberto Soto, that's what I know. He will meet with Golden Boy because he says that he does not have any fights pending with them and they say that he does," Mendoza said. "In my opinion, there is no money in Mexico for a Barrera-Soto fight. Barrera wants to fight in an independent manner, like a free agent, and he plans to clarify that matter with Golden Boy."
