Three-weight world champion Marco Antonio Barrera has heaped praise on veteran promoter Frank Warren as the ‘Baby-Faced Assasin’ lauded the rise of Scotland’s world champion Ricky Burns in an interview with The Daily Record.
The 38 year-old, who has begun a whirlwind UK visit which will see him talk about his career to the British fans, believes that Burns can become a great of the sport if he is willing to challenge the best and thinks Warren is the man that can deliver for the WBO lightweight title holder.
“I wasn’t scared to fight anybody. I didn’t always win but Burns isn’t afraid to fight anybody and he needs to take on those queuing up if he wants to be one of the greats,” Barrera told The Record.
“Don’t get me wrong, Ricky is a great fighter and a great ambassador for Scotland but he has been made an even bigger name because of (Frank) Warren.
“I only wish Warren was around (me) when I was making a name for myself because he would have made me even better.”
Barrera last stepped into the ring in February 2011 when scoring a second round stoppage win over US-based Domincan Jose Arias in Jalisco, Mexico and is yet to formally announce his retirement from the sport.
