According to the word coming out of Mexico, Marco Antonio Barrera's upcoming bout against Johnny Nolasco (17-4, 8KOs) will be for the vacant WBO interim-lightweight title. The ten round lightweight contest will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico on January 31.
As reported earlier, Nolasco will be a tuneup while Barrera awaits to fight the winner of Nate Campbell-Ali Funeka on February 14. Barrera is the number one contender to Campbell's WBO title. Because Barrera may have to wait some time before a possible clash with Campbell, the WBO, according to reports in Mexico, is putting the interim-title at stake.
Nolasco has been inactive since December 2007 and there appears to be large activity gaps on his official record. The highlight of his career was a close split decision loss to Jason Litzau. He also had a draw with Cornelius Lock and went the distance with Martin Honorio and current champion Steven Luevano.
