This Saturday, there is a lot at stake for Marco Antonio Barrera. The former three division champion returns after a lengthy layoff. He's been inactive since losing a five round technical decision to Amir Khan in March 2009. Barrera's opponent at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas is tough Brazilian boxer Adailton De Jesus. The fight takes place on the undercard of the Latin Fury 15 pay-per-view.
"This is our first fight promoting Marco Antonio Barrera, who is a future Hall of Famer whom we hope to guide to another world title. He's one of the great, great fighters of our time, but he's in tough with this Brazilian named DeJeus," said Top Rank CEO Bob Arum.
"But if he comes through in this fight, we will look to move him before the end of the year for a light weight championship match. Marco will then have an opportunity to win a fourth title, so there is a lot on the line here on Saturday night here in San Antonio."
Barrera's main purpose to continue in the sport is his desire to become the first Mexican boxer to win four major titles in four weight divisions. If Barrera pulls off a win on Saturday, Arum will attempt to put him in line for a major lightweight title before the end of the year. The two possible opponents, who are both promoted by Top Rank, are WBA champion Miguel Acosta (27-3-2, 21 KOs) and WBC champion Humberto Soto (53-7-2, 32 KOs).
"Maybe against Soto or maybe against Acosta, both fighters under contract with Top Rank," said Arum. "Marco Antonio will have that opportunity to fight for a fourth world title and become the first Mexican in history to win four world titles in four different weight divisions. So I look forward to being in his corner when that happens."
