The opponent for Marco Antonio Barrera's tuneup bout has been announced. Marco will face Meacher Major (15-3, 13KOs) of the Bahamas on January 31 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The ten round lightweight contest will be the headline fight.
Major's three defeats came to Lamont Peterson, Edgar Santana and Edner Cherry. He was stopped by Santana in three, but went the distance with Peterson and Cherry. In his last two bouts, he stopped journeyman veterans Freddy Cruz and Luis Bolano. He usually fights above the lightweight limit or at junior welterweight.
Barrera is using Major to stay busy while waiting for the winner of the February 14 scrap between Nate Campbell and Ali Funeka. Barrera, ranked number one by the WBO, wants to fight Campbell in April.
