Triple world champion, Marco Antonio Barrera, announced that this will be his last year as a professional fighter and he will try to win a championship in a fourth weight category. In the meantime, on Feb. 12 fight in Chihuahua, he faces Dominican Bernie Sanchez. Barrera wants to get a shot at a big lightweight title in his final year as a pro.
Barrera is stuck on facing WBC champion Humberto Soto. That fight may take some time to actually happen. Soto faces Urbano Antillon on the Pacquiao-Mosley card on May 7. If he wins, the next bout will come against the winner of February's bout between WBA champion Miguel Acosta and unbeaten Brandon Rios.
"My age (he turns 37 on Jan. 17) will not allow me to stick around for a long time, so I hope my promoter will soon get me the opportunity to contest for a world championship at lightweight. I'd like to fight against Humberto 'Zorrita' Soto," Barrera told Sal Rodriguez.
