Cache Creek Casino and Resort, Brooks, California - Super bantamweight contender Manuel Avila (19-0, 8KOs) won an eight round unanimous decision over veteran Angel Beranza (36-34-2, 28KOs). The scores were 80-72, 79-73 and 78-74.
Avila was coming off a high profile win over Yoandris Salinas in August. Avila dropped him in the second round of that bout and then Salinas called it a day a few rounds later, claiming a hand injury and giving Avila a sixth round TKO win.
At one times Salinas was regarded as rising prospect on the verge of a world title. He even went to a twelve round draw with Scott Quigg in 2013.
Avila started off the year with a ten round unanimous decision win over Erik Ruiz.
For Beranza, the sometimes upset artist has a long string of defeats, but barely any of his opponents have stopped him inside the distance. The last man to knock him out was one of the best in the sport, Guillermo Rigondeaux, in 2010.
