Most observers felt Amir Mansour deserved more than a draw when he fought unbeaten Gerald Washington on October 13. The Delaware man appeared to have the upper hand, closing the fight convincingly. yet one judge returned a score of 97-93 in Washington’s favour. Speaking to BoxingScene.com this week, Mansour expressed his disappointment.
“I feel like I did what I was supposed to do, I feel like I won the fight,” he insisted.
“At the end of the day it is what it is. Some judges look for different things in the ring. [Adalaide] Byrd has a history of judging so far away from her coworkers. I think she’s one of the very few judges who need to leave the sport of boxing tomorrow because she is inconsistent and makes crazy calls. But as I said, some judges look for certain things that other judges don’t. Unless you sit down and ask her why she made that decision I’ll never know.
“It is disheartening when you know you’ve put everything inside you out in the ring. Going into a person’s home team side, you know you have to do a bit more than just win. The only thing I can say to myself is do more next time.”
Mansour may simply be keen to move on to another high profile encounter which could lead him to a world heavyweight title shot, but would he entertain a return clash with Washington?
“If I felt the fight was close I would say rematch but I don’t think it was close enough to where the fans would want to see a rematch. I haven’t heard one person who watched it say I should have lost or got a draw. I like fights that the fans want to see.”
