While still two weeks from the end of the second quarter, the retirement of Floyd Mayweather has led to a deluge of e-mails from BoxingScene readers and other interested parties. The primary question: with Mayweather gone, who’s #1.
It’s a question with a fairly easy immediate answer but lots of debate on the horizon. For the first time in a while, the landscape of Boxing is truly beginning to shift. Thankfully for the fans, the shift is down the calendar towards young, hungry fighters willing to sacrifice both on the way to the ring and inside of it. The emergence of Miguel Cotto, Kelly Pavlik, Cristian Mijares and Juan Manuel Lopez has meant thrills in the ring that older, wealthier hands Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, and Roy Jones just don’t, or can’t, consistently provide anymore.
It’s a good time to be a fight fan. It’s also a good time to answer the question at the heart of this list.
