Frank Maloney is launching an ambitious plan to bring the British boxing public a world title double-header. Jason Booth’s IBF super-bantamweight title tilt against Canada’s Steve Molitor has been pushed back to September; meanwhile, negotiations for Rendall Munroe’s WBC super-bantamweight mandatory challenge to Tokyo’s Toshiaki Nishioka are at a crucial point, with Maloney hoping to secure home advantage for Munroe in order to put both fights on one bill.
“Jason’s fight has been put back to [Saturday] September the 11th,” confirmed Maloney, “and we are still negotiating for Rendall. We’ve made our offer and are just waiting for a counter-offer. They’ve [Nishioka’s team] have got a TV date in October but I’d like to do a big double-header with Jason and Rendall on the same show in September – I think that would go down really well.”
Frank Warren’s September mega-bill at Birmingham’s LG Arena takes place on the 18th of September; Maloney’s attempted coup could present British boxing fans with two consecutive Saturday nights of big-time boxing.
“Let’s just say that I am working on it,” smiled Maloney when asked if he can put the Booth/Munroe bill together. “We’ve got the cards stacked against us as the mandatory challenger but we are working on it and trying really hard to make it happen.”
