Frank Maloney has spoken in glowing terms of his unbeaten heavyweight contender David Price, after the Liverpudlian former Olympic bronze medallist scored a stunning knockout victory over stablemate Tom Dallas in his home city.
Price (11-0, 9 KO’s) earned himself a British title eliminator against “Big” John McDermott in October which will in turn gain him a shot at the winner of Dereck Chisora's title defence against Tyson Fury and Maloney sees the 27 year-old as the future of the heavyweight division.
“The minute I met David and spoke with him, I realised that this was something special,” Maloney told The Liverpool Echo.
“I think David Price is one of the reasons I’m still in boxing.
“I would love to be the only Englishman to produce two English heavyweight world champions and I believe he will become one.
”David’s qualities are his size and his jab,” added Maloney.
“Every heavyweight must have a good jab otherwise you might as well say goodbye.
“His amateur pedigree is what has prepared him for this because they work on the basics and he has learnt to take these basics across into the pro game.
“Him and his trainer Franny Smith are not frightened to ask questions, not frightened to go to other gyms in America.
Scouser Price fought the first half of his career in the north and has since fought the second half of his bouts in south of England since turning pro in March 2009 and Maloney believes being able to cope with being away from home is the sign of a champion.
“If David had said to me ‘I’m not going to leave Liverpool’ then I would have said he’s never going to be world champion. But because he is willing to take the sacrifices and go to places then I know he will make it.”
