While Paulie Malignaggi is a heavy underdog come this Saturday when he takes on Danny Garcia in his hometown of Brooklyn, at the Barclays Center. Garcia is as high as a 12-1 favorite on many betting sites. Not many boxing insiders have given Malignaggi a chance either.
The odds haven’t deterred his trainer Eric Brown from thinking they can pull off the upset on Saturday.
“Paulie’s made a career out of outboxing the big punchers,” Brown told BoxingScene.com “He’s made a career of that. Paulie has high boxing IQ but come Saturday I expect the best Paulie Malignaggi and the best Danny Garcia at 147.”
Malignaggi last fight was last April when he was stopped by Shawn Porter. Brown feels the layoff was good and says his last performance has nothing to do with what Malignaggi will bring to the ring Saturday.
“I think the layoff was good for us,” Brown said. “We had a lot of problems going into camp for the Shawn Porter fight. I wanted to postpone that fight. I knew Paulie would never go for that because he’s not the type of guy that ducks or dodges. So it didn’t surprise me that Paulie went through with that fight even if I didn’t want him to go through with that fight at the time.”
Come Saturday, Malignaggi will leave it all in the ring according to his trainer
“Paulie’s not one to go in and half step and I expect him to go in there and have a great fight,’ stated the trainer. “He’s (Danny Garcia) not going to have some one that will stand in front of him and trade with him. I know Danny’s been having trouble with that so we’ll see how good he is at 147.”
Though Malignaggi has said good things about the new addition of Angel ‘Memo’ Heredia, Brown says he saw nothing different in this camp. It was nothing but hard work from Malignaggi, as per the norm.
“I don’t know that he really factors in at all,” said Brown of Heredia. “I think what I seen in Paulie has been the Paulie I’m used to seeing, all the hard work he’s been putting in, that’s all Paulie. I’m not sure what he’s brought in was going to make any difference at all. Paulie a workaholic and he’s always going to put 110 percent.”
