Brooklyn, New York- The last time Paulie Malignaggi (34-7, 7KOs) was seen in the ring, he was stopped by Danny Garcia at the Barclays Center. It was there we assumed Malignaggi had called it quits.
Malingaggi continues to fight on, as he takes on Antonio Moscatiello this Saturday in England for the welterweight EU title. Malignaggi doesn’t know if he will ever take on the big names again but he’ll take it one fight at a time to assess his future.
The fight on Saturday takes place on the massive card at the O2 Arena, where the main event will feature a battle of undefeated heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte.
At 147 there are many names that are looking to breakout from the Mayweather-Pacquiao era. Malignaggi says the big fights and the big stars will come at 147.
"At 147 there’s Porter-Thurman, and you have guys like Danny Garcia, Errol Spence, Amir Khan, and Kell Brook,” Malignaggi told BoxingScene.com.
“You’ll always have fun fights at 147 but it’s about marketing them the right way now. Fights will always be entertaining. The division has that history so as long as you mix and match those guys, 147 will always be one of the best divisions in the sport.”
With Mayweather-Pacquiao and Cotto-Canelo taking place in 2015, Malignaggi feels the biggest fight to make in 2016 lies in the heavyweight division - between some of the current big names like Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua.
“In the US, the biggest fight to make is Fury- Wilder and in England the biggest fight to make is Fury-Joshua. It depends what shore you’re on. Although I think we see Fury-Klitschko next, then we’ll go from there,” Malignaggi said.
