Marcos Maidana returned to Argentina and got a hero's welcome from the fans and local media. Last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, "El Chino" Maidana (35-4, 31KOs) dropped a twelve round majority decision to Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) in a welterweight unification. Some called it the toughest fight of Mayweather's career in several years.
In an impromptu press conference at a chaotic international airport in the locality of Ezeiza, Maidana discussed the fight and demanded a rematch in September.
"He was surprised when I attacked. He didn't know what to do. I'm ready to win. All of the other opponents who faced him were intimidated by him. I did what none of his opponents did before, and it cost him. It was a very close fight. But I was the one who made the fight, so for me I won. A draw might not have been bad. Still, it was close. Mayweather is very good, but I proved I'm also good," Maidana said.
"I'm happy to have made a good fight against the pound for pound world champion, but he complicated matters by not allowing me to use my gloves in the fight, even though they were already approved [by the Nevada State Athletic Commission]... All the time he was trying to find excuses. He is a baby, a whiner ... I for one want a rematch already, but I have no clear indication of what will happen. Now I know him and that makes it easier for me."
"He's hard to hit. I tried to hit the area of the right eye where the cut was and I could not. That whole issue with the gloves and all of the complaining bothered me so much. He is a crying baby. I'm ready for September. I want revenge."
