WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana came home to Argentina and received a hero's welcome from his countryman. Maidana became a sensation last Saturday night in San Antonio, when he defeated the heavily favored Adrien Broner to capture the welterweight crown.
Maidana scored two knockdowns, hurt Broner numerous times and controlled most of the action. All three judges scored the fight in his favor.
Before the fight, Broner promised to "beat Maidana to death" and said "he don't talk any English but after I f*** him up he's going to start speaking English."
Maidana laughed at the comments when speaking to local reporters in Argentina.
"He said he was going to make me speak English, I think now he's going to speak Spanish. He tries to inimidate you before his fights, and I wasn't afraid of him. He talks a lot and does a lot of these antics in the ring, but I stayed calm. We knew we were in a fight with a difficult opponent, but I was very well trained to keep myself going for twelve rounds. It was a very intense training camp in the physical depoartment and that's part of the reason why I was able to achieve success," Maidana said.
