The Adrien Broner-Marcos Maidana fight may have been moved to San Antonio but the matchup still remains one of the more intriguing bouts this year. This will definitely be one of Broner’s biggest tests and this will be Maidana’s opportunity to fight for a world title in the Welterweight division.
Before the fight was even officially announced, Broner and Maidana ran into each other in Las Vegas during the Floyd Mayweather-Saul Alvarez fight week. There was a confrontation where things got a little physical and there was reported pushing and shoving .
When BoxingScene spoke to Maidana after a hard workout in Oxnard, he was asked if he felt what happened in Las Vegas was an indication of what we would see in the days leading up to this fight or if he’d simply ignore Broner from here on in.
“If he respects me then I’ll do the same and respect my opponent. Broner is accustomed to disrespecting his opponents. I saw when he fought Eloy Perez he insulted him in front of his family. I don’t like that and I won’t let him disrespect me” said the hard hitting Argentine.
This will be Maidana’s 4th fight with renowned trainer Robert Garcia who also trains the likes of Brandon Rios, Nonito Donaire, and Mikey Garcia. Many have seen improvements in Maidana’s fight game but while there may be improvements, Maidana feels he’s still the same.
“I’ve progressed defensively and also boxing wise as well. But I’m always the same, always coming forward. I may be a little more technical and have more waist movement but I’m still aggressive like I should be. I always fight that way and my form of fighting I will never change” Maidana would tell BoxingScene.
One thing Broner did not have to worry about in his previous bout with Paulie Malignaggi was punching power as Malignaggi isn’t the hardest of hitters. Despite how the fight is going, Maidana has the ability to change a fight with one punch and he promises to look to use his power early and often.
“I’m going to come out looking to use my power. Use my power and my strength. I’m going to go forward. That’s what I’m going to do” said Maidana.
Both fighters will once again come face to face at their upcoming press conference and we’ll see if there will be anymore fireworks outside the ring.
