Trainer Danny Garcia, the former coach of Magomed Abdusalamov (18-1, 18KOs), discussed the boxer's recent fight with Mike Perez, which took place on November 2 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Garcia trained Magomed for four fights, but then the Russian boxer relocated from California to Florida, where he started training with John David Jackson.
In the fight with Perez, Magomed lost a ten round unanimous decision and also took a lot of damage. He suffered a broken left hand, a broken nose, a swollen jaw and a very swollen face. After he was taken to the hospital, a brain bleed was discovered and surgery was performed. Magomed was placed in a medically induced coma and has yet to come out of that state.
"It is pretty sad, Mago is my friend. I know his whole family...... his beautiful family... his wife, three daughters and his father. He was here with us for four fights. He was very happy with us, I think he was improving, but then he had to leave for some reason and go to Florida. He was trained over there with coach Jackson. He had this fight, it was a hard fight. Things happen and I'm sad," Garcia said.
"It was a good fight and because he is one of the fighters who can finish in one second, a couple of times he hurt Perez so [the corner] had that mind set that he could hit him hard [and knock Perez out]. But he was getting hit a lot. It's hard to tell what I would do because it's one thing to say I would stop it or do this or that, but at that second, when the fight is going, it's hard, especially when the fighter Magomed doesn't want to stop the fight."
