Matthew Macklin will not come out with the IBF Inter-Continental middleweight title tonight, whether he wins or not.
The 33-year-old failed the check weigh-in ahead of his crossroads clash against Brian Rose, for the vacant belt, live on Sky Sports Box Office at the O2 Arena in London.
IBF rules stipulate that fighters contesting a title belonging to that particular governing body can only gain 10 pounds in weight from the weigh-in until 9am the following morning, on the day of the fight.
Macklin (34-6, 22 KOs) tipped the scales at 11st 5lbs 7oz at yesterday’s public weigh-in, but he put on 11-and-a-half pounds and came in a pound-and-a-half over this morning, meaning that the title is only on the line for Rose (28-3-1, 8 KOs), 31, who put on just seven pounds more than the 11st 5lbs 5oz he weighed yesterday.
Elsewhere, Lee Selby (22-1, 8 KOs) was a pound inside the rehydration limit ahead of his mandatory IBF featherweight title defence against Eric Hunter (21-3, 11 KOs).
