The coming days will be decisive for the future of Puerto Rican junior lightweight Alberto "El Explosivo" Machado.

The representatives of the former World Boxing Association (WBA) "regular" 130 pound champion will talk with the executives of Golden Boy Promotions to discuss the viability of Machado facing for the second time Andrew "El Chango" Cancio, who beat the Boricua by knockout back in February.

Machado has the right to exercise a clause in the contract that would grant him an immediate rematch, possibly on June 8 in New York.

"Everything is valid. We are going to look at the results of some body tests that were done to Machado and we will make the determination, "said Juan De León, coach and manager of the Puerto Rican fighter, to Carlos Gonzalez.

However, De Leon warned that the other alternative would be to rise in division.

"If some [medical] tests that will be done later show that he should not get down to 130 pounds, then we would make the decision to jump up to 135. Cancio would then defend against the first ranked foe of the WBA," said De Leon.

Machado has been emphatic in that he wants the opportunity to recover the belt and, in turn, pointed out that the setback was due to having to resolve family issues before reporting to Los Angeles, California, to train under the tutelage of Freddie Roach .

"He (Machado) assumed responsibility. If he makes the decision to work as he always does, he can do the weight. For the fight Cancio he worked less time and that affected him. Machado is training at full steam, the weight is where he should be for this time of training and his body mass has been increasing so that is good news," concluded De Leon.
