The one-time WBO cruiserweight champion, Enzo Maccarinelli (32-5, 25KOs), could find himself in position to fight fellow Welsh boxer Nathan Cleverly (21-0, 10KOs). Macca, a career cruiserweight who once faced David Haye in a heavily hyped unification, recently announced his decision to drop down to light heavyweight.
"I still want to be a fighter," said Maccarinelli. "Although I have made a few mistakes in recent years. I am coming back to fight in the light heavyweight division because my desire is still strong."
Macca has been mulling his future since the deadly knockout loss to German boxer Alexander Frenkel last September. If Cleverly lifts the WBO light heavyweight crown from Juergen Braehmer on May 21, then promoter Frank Warren would consider the possibility of matching his two boxers, Maccarinelli and Cleverly, in a big Welsh battle.
"We've had some really good Welsh fighters on the scene in the past couple of years," said Maccarinelli. "But between Joe's retirement and myself it has slowed a little."
