Earlier this evening an article by Vadim Pushkin ran on BoxingScene.com in which Vlad Hryunov, manager of Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) stated that WBA interim-champion Luis Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) failed to sign a bout agreement by the deadline date of September 4th.
BoxingScene.com spoke with Ortiz's manager Jay Jimenez to get his reaction to Hryunov's statements.
Jimenez said that not only did they sign the agreement on time but that they added a stipulation that both fighters must be randomly drug tested by VADA - which he said Team Ustinov rejected.
"That is false and we have proof. We signed the agreement but with an amendment saying there would have to be VADA testing. They didn't agree to the VADA testing. I have a letter from the WBA saying there has to be VADA testing or there is no fight." Jimenez stated.
"We can start the VADA testing right now. We have been using VADA for our fights. We used them for the (Bryant) Jennings fight. I don't know why they wouldn't want the testing."
Jimenez said that he wants to make sure his fighter is on an even playing field with Ustinov. He isn't accusing Ustinov of doing anything wrong but is uneasy with the recent rash of positive drug tests in Russia.
"Damn near the whole Russian Olympic team failed tests. (Alexander) Povetkin and Lucas Browne failed tests. I'm not saying its their fault. I just want to protect my fighter. I don't see what the problem is with that," Jimenez told BoxingScene.com.
As for what is next for Ortiz -who recently had his contract bought out by Dade Promotions from his other co-promoter Golden Boy - he said that he has no problem fighting Ustinov with VADA testing but that he has bigger fish to fry and he wants the big fights as soon as possible.
"I dare (IBF champion Anthony) Joshua or (WBC champion Deontay) Wilder to call me out. They need to stop hiding and man up and drop their balls like a real man. They may also have titles but I'm the People's Champ," Ortiz told BoxingScene.com.
