Former welterweight champion Luis Collazo (29-3, 14KOs) is focused on reclaiming his title in 2009. Collazo is in line to fight WBC welterweight Andre Berto (23-0, 19KOs). Moves are being made to hold the fight in the early part of next year. Speaking with BoxingScene.com's Ernest Gabion, Collazo feels that his experience will be too much for Berto, who he still views a being a bit green in the ring.
"Right now the WBC made me the mandatory. Berto is young, he's fast, but I still think he’s green. If the fight does happen, it will be a great, exciting fight. Hopefully by January we could make it happen," Collazo said. "It's going to be a hell of a year. God blessed me to come back off the Mosley loss. I came back strong and mentally ready, physically ready and I'm hungry. I'm ready to get the titles."
There were many who felt that Collazo did enough to deserve a close decision against Ricky Hatton. He also presented some problems to Shane Mosley in 2007. He broke his left hand during the fight and says the injury is why he faded down ths stretch. Many opponents underrate him, but that's how he likes it.
"I'm young. I'm fast. I'm a southpaw and not too many people want to fight southpaws. I'm going to stay ready, stay in the gym and make the non-believers into believers. I'm always underrated. I like to stay like that. And then I come and win and get the big fights," Collazo said.
